Authenticate a Designer Bag Bought in Japan: Independent Checks on Used Luxury

By Yuki Iemura, Tokyo ·

Many people abroad look at Japanese second-hand shops for pre-owned designer bags, wallets and accessories. The difficulty from abroad is simple: you can’t hold the item, you can’t read the shop’s terms easily, and if something turns out to be wrong, sending it back from your country is slow and expensive. An independent authentication check before the item ships gives you a second opinion that doesn’t come from the seller or from me.

Short answer: For ¥4,300, I arrange third-party authentication of a branded item I buy for you. An independent service checks it and I pass on its written result. The judgement is theirs, not mine. I never buy fakes, but I am not an authenticator, and I don’t claim to be one.

What the service is

When I buy a branded item for you from a shop in Japan, new or second-hand, I can have it checked by an independent authentication service before it is shipped to you. You receive that service’s written result.

There are three separate parties here, and that is the point:

  • The shop sells the item and stands behind it under its own terms.
  • The authentication service examines it and gives its written opinion.
  • I buy it, arrange the check, and pass on the result. I don’t add my own verdict to theirs.

I keep these roles separate on purpose. A personal shopper who says “I checked it, it’s real” is giving you an opinion you can’t verify. A written result from an independent service is something you can read, keep and show to someone else.

Why it matters for used luxury bought from abroad

  • You can’t inspect it yourself. Photos help, and I photograph every item when it reaches me, but photos are not an examination.
  • The seller’s description is in Japanese, and its terms for returns and guarantees are in Japanese too.
  • Returning from abroad is hard. A problem found after the parcel has crossed the world is much harder to fix than one found while the item is still in Japan.

What the written result does and does not do

It does: give you an independent opinion on the item, in writing, from a party that is neither the seller nor me.

It does not:

  • Come from me. The judgement is the service’s, not mine, and I don’t add to it or change it.
  • Turn an opinion into a guarantee from me. I pass the result on as it is.
  • Replace the shop’s own terms. If the shop offers its own guarantee or returns policy, that is a separate matter between the shop and the buyer, and I can read it for you in Japanese before you order.
  • Tell you anything about value or resale price. I don’t buy for resale under personal shopping in any case.

What it costs

Item Amount
Third-party authentication of a branded item ¥4,300
The goods The shop’s price in Japan, including consumption tax, with a photo of the receipt
Purchase fee 25% of the first ¥30,000 of goods, 20% of the part from ¥30,000 to ¥100,000, 15% of the part above ¥100,000
Each additional shop in the same parcel ¥2,200
Shipping and handling Fixed, quoted before you pay
Payment processing 4% of the total

Import tax and duty in your country are charged by your customs on arrival and are not in my quote. For the United States, the duty must be paid before the parcel leaves Japan, so I collect it in advance with the prepayment provider’s fee and show both in the quote.

Worked examples

Shipping is not included below because it depends on the parcel and the country. It is quoted as a fixed amount, and the 4% processing applies to it as well.

1. A pre-owned designer bag at ¥120,000 from a second-hand shop, with authentication.

¥
Goods 120,000
Purchase fee (25% of 30,000 + 20% of 70,000 + 15% of 20,000) 24,500
Third-party authentication 4,300
Subtotal 148,800
Payment processing 4% 5,952
Total before shipping 154,752

2. A branded wallet at ¥45,000, with authentication.

¥
Goods 45,000
Purchase fee (25% of 30,000 + 20% of 15,000) 10,500
Third-party authentication 4,300
Subtotal 59,800
Payment processing 4% 2,392
Total before shipping 62,192

On example 1, the check adds about 3% to the cost before shipping. Whether that is worth it is your call; I simply make sure you have the option.

What I will not do

  • Buy fakes. Not knowingly, not as “inspired by”, not at a client’s request.
  • Give my own verdict on whether an item is genuine. I am not an authenticator.
  • Buy on auction sites or marketplace apps under personal shopping. I buy there only for Private buyer clients, on a monthly retainer of ¥165,000 (three months minimum, five clients at a time).
  • Buy for resale. Personal shopping is for things you want for yourself.
  • Send anything that can’t legally leave Japan or enter your country.

How to request it, step by step

  1. Send the link to the item on the shop’s site on the request form, and write “authentication” in the details, with the country it is going to.
  2. I reply within one business day with a total, including the ¥4,300 line, and anything in the shop’s Japanese terms you should know.
  3. You approve and pay by PayPal, Wise or Payoneer. The quote holds for 7 days unless the shop changes the price or sells out.
  4. I buy the item and photograph it when it reaches me.
  5. The independent service checks it, and I send you its written result.
  6. I pack and ship with tracking, usually within 3 business days of the last item arriving.

FAQ

Do you check the item yourself?

I photograph every item when it reaches me, but I don’t judge authenticity. An independent service does, and I pass on its written result.

Which authentication service do you use?

An independent third party, not the shop and not me. Ask me when you request a quote if you want the details for your item.

Is the result a guarantee?

It is the service’s written opinion. I pass it on as it is and don’t add a guarantee of my own.

Can I have something authenticated that I bought elsewhere?

The service on my site is for branded items I buy for you. Write to me if your case is different.

Can you authenticate something from Mercari or Yahoo! Auctions?

I don’t buy on marketplace apps or auction sites under personal shopping. That is my Private buyer service only. See Buying from Mercari Japan from Abroad for Mercari’s own routes.

Do you buy fakes or replicas?

No, never.

Does authentication change the import duty?

Duty and tax in your country depend on your customs, not on me. Check with them before you order. For the EU, see Buying from Japan into the EU in 2026; for the US, Shipping a Parcel from Japan to the US.

Send the item link on the request form, or write to me if you want to talk it through first.
