Christmas 2026 Shipping from Japan: When to Order So a Gift Arrives in Time
If you want something from Japan under a tree on 25 December, the date that matters is not the shipping date. It is the day you ask me to buy it, because the shop has to deliver it to me first. This is how I work backwards from Christmas, using Japan Post’s own figures, as of October 2026.
Short answer: Japan Post’s general guidance is to post airmail for Christmas by early December; surface mail needed to go by late October. Allowing about a week for buying and packing, I suggest sending me your request by 20 November for the US and Europe, 27 November for Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and 4 December for Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore.
What Japan Post says for Christmas
Japan Post publishes a Christmas notice each autumn. Last year’s came out on 14 October 2025; as of 19 October 2026 the 2026 notice is not on its news page yet. Its standing FAQ gives the same guidance:
- Airmail (and EMS): post by roughly early December.
- Surface (sea) mail: post by roughly late October. For 2026 that window is effectively gone.
It does not publish exact cut-off dates by country. It does warn that the year-end peak can slow delivery even to places with no announced delay, and that parcels containing goods go through customs, so post earlier than the general guide.
SAL (the cheaper “economy air” service) is shown as not accepted for most major destinations on Japan Post’s acceptance chart as of 15 October 2026, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, France and Singapore. In practice the choice this December is airmail parcel or EMS.
How long the parcel itself takes
Japan Post’s average delivery days from Tokyo, not counting the posting day. They are averages, not guarantees.
| Destination | Air parcel (days) | EMS (days) |
|---|---|---|
| United States | 14 | see Japan Post’s calculator |
| Canada | 9 | 6 |
| United Kingdom | 8 | 5 |
| France | 9 | 6 |
| Germany | 8 | 5 |
| Australia | 10 | see Japan Post’s calculator |
| New Zealand | 12 | 9 |
| Hong Kong | 6 | see Japan Post’s calculator |
| Taiwan | 5 | 2 |
| Singapore | 5 | 2 |
Working backwards: my suggested dates
My side adds time before the parcel is posted: a quote within one business day, your payment, the shop’s own delivery to me, and then I photograph, pack and ship, usually within 3 business days of the last item arriving. For an in-stock item from one shop, that is roughly a week.
These dates are my own planning suggestions, not Japan Post’s, and assume an in-stock item and airmail parcel. EMS buys a few more days.
| Ship to | Send me your request by | Why |
|---|---|---|
| United States | 20 November | 14-day average, plus the new US filing step (below) |
| UK and EU | 20 November | Japan Post reports ongoing delays to Europe |
| Canada | 27 November | 9-day average |
| Australia, New Zealand | 27 November | 10–12-day average |
| Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore | 4 December | 5–6-day average |
A pre-order, a lottery or a release on a fixed date sets its own timetable: if the item is not in my hands by the end of November, I will tell you plainly that Christmas is unlikely.
Rules that changed this year
United States. From 15 October 2026, Japan Post says US Customs requires advance filing for all mail containing goods up to US$2,500. Letters and cards are exempt. Parcels need the filing done through an app (Japan Post names Zonos and SafePackage), a “DDP-” number on the label, and duty estimated and paid in advance; the provider charges its own fee. Personal gifts of US$100 or less are duty-free but still need the filing. Last Christmas was stricter: Japan Post’s November 2025 notice allowed only gifts between individuals, up to US$100. Expect the rules to keep moving. Before I quote a US parcel, I check the current rule and tell you what applies.
Europe and Africa. Japan Post’s update of 7 October 2026 says delivery to parts of Europe and Africa is still slow because of congestion linked to the situation in the Middle East. It gives no number of days, which is why I suggest the earlier date.
EU duty. The EU ended its duty exemption for goods under €150 on 1 July 2026. Japan Post’s notice sets out how duty now applies, which depends on whether a parcel is an online sale, a gift between individuals or business-to-business. Check it, or your own customs authority, before relying on a figure.
New Year
1 January is a national holiday in Japan, and Japanese services pause around it. Japan Post has not yet published its 2026–27 year-end schedule. Last year, for example, its UGX courier service took its last export parcels for Europe on 18 December 2025 and for the US and Canada on 22 December, and parcels accepted later were dispatched from 5 January 2026. If you want something to arrive for New Year rather than Christmas, use the same dates as above: a parcel posted in the last days of December may not move until January.
Japanese shops, including online shops, announce their own year-end closures. When I quote, I check the shop’s notice so the buying step does not stall over the holiday.
What this means if you order through me
- Tell me the deadline with your request (“must arrive by 22 December”). I will say at the quote stage whether it is realistic, not after you have paid.
- Combine early. I hold items free for 30 days, so you can send several requests in November and I ship them together in one parcel.
- Costs: the shop’s price including Japanese consumption tax; my purchase fee of 25% of the first ¥30,000, 20% of the part from ¥30,000 to ¥100,000 and 15% above that; shipping as a fixed amount quoted before you pay; and payment processing of 4% of the total.
- Duty and import tax are charged by your country’s customs and are not part of my quote, except for the United States: there I collect the duty and the prepayment provider’s fee in advance, shown as separate lines.
- I cannot guarantee a delivery date. Japan Post’s figures are averages, and I will not promise what the post cannot.
Send me a link through the form on the home page, or write to me with what you want and the date it needs to arrive.
